Eagles Play to Split in Season Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, F.L. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (1-1, 0-0 NEAC) played to a split in its season opening games in Florida, defeating Northern Vermont-Johnson 11-2 before falling to Rosemont College, 3-2 in nine innings.

After the Badgers scored a run in the top of the first inning, the Eagles answered back with three unearned runs on the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.  CSE continued to apply pressure offensively, adding three more runs in the second inning to open up a 6-1 lead. 

The Badgers added a run in the third however Brittany Demarest lined a RBI double to right center, giving the Eagles a 7-2 lead.  CSE continued to pour it on in the fourth inning as Neckolette Nedwell and Ashley Vonhorn had run scoring hits as the Eagles scored four in the inning to take the game, 11-2 in five innings.

Alyssa Vega picked up the win on the mound, pitching two innings in relief, striking out three and surrendering just one hit.  Jennifer Tinger scored two runs and had a hit while Teya Carr scored three runs and had a double.

After a neither team was able to get a hit through the first 2.5 innings, Rosemont knocked its first hit in the bottom of the third.  However, the next batter grounded into a 6-3-5 double play, the second double play the Eagles turned on the day.

In the bottom of the fourth, with Rosemont having two on and one out, Alyssa Hampton escaped the jam, holding the game scoreless.

The pitcher's duel continued into the seventh inning as the game remained scoreless.  In the top of the seventh the Eagles loaded the bases with two outs, but were unable to plate across any runs.

In the top of the eighth, with runners on second and third, Nedwell lined a SAC fly to center, giving the Eagles the first run of the game.  In the bottom of the eighth, Rosemont added a run with two outs to tie the game at one.

In the top of the ninth, Demarest scored on a throwing error by Rosemont to regain a 2-1 lead. 

In the ninth, the Eagles pushed across another run however in the bottom of the ninth, Rosemont scored two runs with two outs to take the game, 3-2.

On the mound, Hampton spun a gem, pitching 8 2/3 innings, giving up just one earned run while striking out two.  Dunn finished the game with three hits while Nedwell added two.

Following an off day on Sunday, the Eagles return to action on Monday with games against Emmanuel College and Elizabethtown College beginning at 1:45 pm.
