Eagles Roll To Senior Day Sweep Over Morrisville

MORRISTOWN, N.J.– The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (16-6, 5-1 NEAC) earned a conference sweep over Morrisville State on Senior Day, defeating the Mustangs 11-3 and 15-1 in five innings.

 

After the Mustangs scored a run in the top of the first, the Eagles answered back with a RBI single by Karyn Shimazu to tie the game at one.

 

In the bottom of the third, following back to back hits by Teya Carr and Jontae Patton, Shimazu hit a sac fly to left, driving in her second run of the game and give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Next up, Sierra Dunn lined a single to right, scoring Patton to up the Eagles lead to two.  CSE added another run later in the inning to take a 4-1 lead into the fourth inning.

 

In the bottom of the fourth, Patton, Shimazu, Demarest Keturah Cohen and Marielis Alicea had run scoring hits as the Eagles plated seven runs in the inning to give the Eagles a 11-1 advantage.

 

In the top of the fifth, the Mustangs scored two runs, but Alyssa Hampton retired the final two batters to give the Eagles the 11-3 win in five innings. 

 

Hampton earned her fourth win of the season to get back to over .500.  Hampton struck out a season high eight batters.

 

After a scoreless top of the first, Ashley VonHorn got the Eagles on the board by swiping home to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.  Later in the inning, Kathryn Harrigan lined a run scoring single to center, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead after an inning of play.

 

Following a run in the top of the second by the Mustangs, Carr smoked a two-run single up the middle to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead. The next batter, Patton, crushed a two-run double to left to up the lead to 6-1.

 

In the bottom of the third, Carr, Patton, Alicea and Harrigan had consecutive run scoring hits to blow open the game at 11-1.  CSE added an additional run in the inning as it led 12-1 after three innings of play.

 

CSE added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and Alyssa Vega finished the game with a scoreless inning on the mound in the fifth as the Eagles took the contest, 15-1 in five innings.

 

Vega picked up her sixth win of the season on the mound to improve to 6-1 on the season.  Patton finished 3-3 with four RBI's and two runs scored while Carr was 2-2 with three RBI's.

 

In between the two games, Kim VanSavage, Rachael Romer, Alicea and VonHorn were honored for Senior Day. Each senior received a framed picture for their contributions to the program.

 

CSE returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Cazenovia College at 12 pm.
