CLERMONT, F.L. – The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (2-2, 0-0 NEAC) fell to Emmanuel College, 17-9 before coming back from four down in the sixth to defeat Elizabethtown College, 7-4 on Monday afternoon.
In the bottom half of the first inning of game one against Emmanuel College, the Saints struck for five runs in the inning to open an early 5-0 lead.
In the top of the second, following back to back hits by Jontae Patton and Teya Carr, both players used a double steal to get the Eagles its first run of the game.
The Saints added five more runs in the second inning to take a 10-1 advantage over the Eagles.
The Eagles' bats got going in the top of the third as four straight batters reached base en route to three runs in the inning. Neckolette Nedwell and Patton produced run scoring hits in the inning.
Trailing 13-5 in the fourth, with two runners on and two outs, Carr ripped a double to the left field gap, scoring two and getting the Eagles within 13-7. An inning later, the Eagles used an error in left field to score two more runs and cut the deficit to 13-9.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Saints put across four runs, taking the game 17-9 in five innings.
Patton, Carr and Marielis Alicea finished with two hits apiece in game one.
On the mound in game two, Alyssa Vega retired the side through the first two innings. In the bottom of the second, Teya Carr lined the first hit of the game for either team.
In the top of the fourth, with a runner on third, Vega induced a pop-out to first followed by a groundout to third, to escape the jam. In the top of the fifth, the Blue Jays plated four runs to take a 4-0 lead.
The Eagles loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth. The next batter, Carr, got hit by a pitch to score a run and get the Eagles on the board. Ashley VonHorn and Demarest followed by reaching base and driving in a run each to get the Eagles within one.
Laura Costello continued the rally, drawing a full count walk to score a run and tie the game at four. With one out, Kimberly Van Savage laid down a bunt, scoring Demarest to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead. CSE added two more runs in the inning to take a 7-4 lead into the final inning.
In the top of the seventh, Vega, continuing her gem, retired the side in order to give the Eagles its second win of the season.
Vega pitched a complete game and struck out three to earn her first win of the season. Dunn added two hits and a rbi.
CSE returns to action on Tuesday when it takes on New England College for a doubleheader beginning at 9 am.
