Morristown, N.J.- Junior
Ashley Pledger became the 12th player in Saint Elizabeth's history to score her 1,000th career point on Wednesday night in the win over Penn State Berks.
With 5:29 remaining in the game, Ashley drove to the basket and converted the layup, giving her a 1,000 career points. Despite being only 17 points away from 1,000 before the game began, Ashley was unaware of how many she needed. "Scoring my 1000th career point as a junior to me was a great accomplishment. I had no idea when the day would come, but I was grateful it did. I didn't want to know how far away I was because I wanted to accomplish it unknowingly and without having to take my mind off one goal. Winning. Coming into collegiate athletics, scoring 1,000 points has always been a goal of mine since freshman year. Knowing I had four years to accomplish it, I felt that it would come slowly but surely if I worked hard enough. After experiencing a few injuries my freshman and Sophomore year, I didn't let that stop me. I got back up and came back healthier and stronger. I was hungry to be back in the game this year. Hungry to succeed, and hungry to make playoffs. The one thing I told myself this year was, "with minor setbacks, come major comebacks" and this year I wanted to come back relentless."
Pledger was also grateful that she had the opportunity to achieve the milestone in front of her friends and family. "Being able to experience such a task in front of my friends and family made the night worthwhile. I was so grateful for everyone that could or couldn't make it, knowing I had their support. They are the ones that constantly push me each and every day."Â When asked what the best part of her night was, Ashley gave the response you would expect from the team player that she is. "To come back after a fifteen point deficit felt great. I think that in that moment it gave not only me, but the team the momentum we needed to go out and take the win. We may have gotten off to a slow start but in the end the team that played their hearts out and wanted it most came on top. I was happy that was my team."
Ashley says she also could not have gotten as far as she has without the support of her coaches. "In the end I couldn't be more grateful for those at cse who have supported me since my freshman year. However, I couldn't be more thankful for my coaches because they are the ones who have made me the player I am today, especially Coach Nicole."
Pledger will look to add to her point total and keep the Eagles playoff hopes alive on Friday when they travel to Bryn Athyn for a key NEAC matchup.
