NEWARK, N.J. (March 10, 2026) – The St. Elizabeth University baseball team continued its early-season slate on Tuesday afternoon, falling to Rutgers-Newark, 7-1, in non-conference action in Newark, N.J.
The Eagles showed resilience throughout the contest, collecting five hits and breaking through in the eighth inning to avoid the shutout. Junior Owen Murphy paced the offense, going 2-for-4 with the team's lone RBI, driving in Harrison Curran on a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth. Curran also added a hit and scored the lone run for St. Elizabeth, while Trevor Policastro contributed a strong day at the plate with two hits in four at-bats.
Rutgers-Newark jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding one in the second before putting up three more in the third to build a 7-0 advantage. The Eagles settled in after the early surge, as John Santomassino delivered an impressive relief outing. The right-hander tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out five and walking only one, helping St. Elizabeth keep Rutgers-Newark off the board over the final five frames.
Starter Aidan Folsom was charged with the loss, while Santomassino's strong relief appearance highlighted the Eagles' effort on the mound.
St. Elizabeth showed signs of life late in the game, stringing together hits from Curran and Policastro in the eighth before Murphy's RBI fly ball brought home the team's run. The Eagles also received solid offensive contributions from Policastro and Murphy, who each finished with multiple hits.
