MORRISTOWN, N.J. — The St. Elizabeth University baseball team put together one of its most complete offensive performances of the season on Friday afternoon, rolling past St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, 17-6, at home in Morristown.
The Eagles wasted no time setting the tone, erupting for six runs in the bottom of the first inning before breaking the game wide open with a 10-run fourth inning. St. Elizabeth finished with 17 runs on 17 hits, while holding St. Joseph's to six runs on six hits.
Owen Murphy led the offensive charge with a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two doubles. Nick Villalba also delivered a standout performance, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Cameron Vicari drove in a game-high four runs on a 2-for-4 afternoon that included a double.
The Eagles got production throughout the lineup, as Curtis Battle added two RBIs, Harrison Curran scored three runs and drove in another, and Jordan Martin came off the bench to contribute an RBI triple in the fifth inning. Trevor Policastro scored three times, and Sam Porch Jr. and Chris Povemba each added an RBI in the dominant win.
St. Elizabeth's explosive first inning featured RBI hits from Murphy and Villalba before Vicari cleared the bases with a three-run double to center field. A sacrifice bunt from Povemba capped the six-run frame and gave the Eagles a commanding early lead.
The Eagles then turned the game into a rout in the fourth, plating 10 runs on 10 hits. Murphy, Cristian Mejia, Villalba, Vicari, Porch Jr., Battle, and Curran all drove in runs during the inning as St. Elizabeth built a 16-0 advantage.
On the mound, Stephen Crandall earned the win for St. Elizabeth, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just two hits, striking out one, and walking one. Alipio Figueroa added a scoreless sixth inning with two strikeouts before St. Joseph's scored six runs in the seventh against the bullpen.
St. Joseph's was led by George Demacopoulos, who drove in three runs, and Daniel Popovitch, who added two RBIs in the seventh inning.
