The Saint Elizabeth University women's basketball team returned to the hardwood after New Year's break to take on conference foe Wilson College. The Eagles improved their conference record to 4-1 while the Phoenix dropped to 3-2.
The first quarter was largely competitive as Wilson shot 50% from the field in the opening frame to keep things close. The Eagles did hold a six-point lead on a couple of occasions, but the Phoenix did well down the stretch to narrow their deficit to two points. The score was 15-13 heading to the second quarter after a buzzer-beating layup by the Phoenix. While Wilson was shooting hot in the first, the roles were reversed in the second as Saint Elizabeth caught fire from the field. The Eagles went on a 14-2 run over the last 4 minutes of the half to extend the lead to 43-26.
Saint Elizabeth was able to increase its lead in the third before Wilson tried to rally in the fourth. Two consecutive fast break layups opened the lead up to 21 points late in the 3rd quarter. In the fourth, the Phoenix would hit a pair of 3-pointers and added an and-one layup and free throw. That made the score 67-50, but the Phoenix could get no closer the rest of the way. The Eagles defense was feisty forcing 26 Phoenix turnovers that led to 25 points. Saint Elizabeth also continued their domination in the paint outscoring Wilson 50-16 in the restricted area.
The Eagles saw significant contributions from multiple players.
Destiny Battle led the group with 27 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists.
Yasminah White finished with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Mid-year transfer
Paige Neal made her home debut scoring 13 points and grabbing 5 rebounds.
Ahjionae Cobb added 10 points of her own dominating the mid-range area.
Laila Kendle was masterful on the defensive end recording 11 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks on the night.
The Lady Eagles will take on the University of Valley Forge this Saturday in a conference double-header. Tip-off is scheduled for 1pm at Saint Joseph Hall with the men's game following.
