With over 20 lead changes in the game, it was truly a back and forth contest between Saint Elizabeth University and St. Joseph University Long Island. In the end, the ball didn't bounce the Eagles way as St. Joseph University Long Island was able to hang on for a 1-point win. The Eagles drop to 1-4 on the young season while the Golden Eagles improve to 4-2 on the year.
As the game got underway, both teams exchanged baskets early, with the Eagles pulling ahead by six at the halfway point in the first half off of back-to-back jump shots from
Lawrence Reid and
Nasir Owens. With just three minutes left in the first half, Saint Elizabeth would build their lead up to eight points off a three from
Tyrese Convover. In the final three minutes of the first half, the Golden Eagles would score six straight points to cut the lead to just four heading into the break.
SEU started the second half with another three from Conover; and the Golden Eagles would respond just a minute later with a three of their own to bring the lead to four. Over the next two minutes, Saint Elizabeth responded with a short scoring run of their own, producing eight points that was capped by a
Jonathan Ramos three. Back-to-back jump shots brought the Golden Eagles lead back to five with just seven minutes to go.
Down the stretch,
Pierre Harden was effective in scoring a post layup to give the SEU the lead with again with 24 seconds to go. However, the Eagles were unable to secure the defensive rebound on the other end which led to an unfortunate putback by St. Joseph. Harden caught the ball on the wing on the last possession of the game but was unable to get a shot attempt before time expired.
D'Angelo Blackmond recorded his double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Lawrence Reid achieved a new career-high in points with 10 on the night while also grabbing 4 rebounds.
Pierre Harden was the Eagles leading scorer and finished with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
The Eagles next contest will be their United East Conference opener against rival Keystone College. The game will be held on Wednesday November 29th at home with a 7pm tip off time.
