Hackettstown, N.J. – The Saint Elizabeth University baseball team fell 4-3 in game one before winning game two, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Centenary.
Game 1
The Eagles (2-4) trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but took the lead in the third after sophomore
Bryce Egan (Hamilton, N.J. / Hamilton West) scored the tying run and senior
Ray Orta (Bound Brook, N.J. / Bridgewater Raritan) stole home to take a 3-1 advantage.
However, Centenary (3-4) scored one in the fourth and tied the game in the fifth. The Cyclones kept the pressure on in the ninth and scored the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
Senior pitcher
Jovon Portuondo (Newark, N.J. / Newark East Side) tossed 2.2 innings of relief, struck out two, and did not allow an earned run. Fellow senior pitcher
Tito Morales (Brick, N.J. / Brick Twp) tossed 2.1 innings of relief and did not allow an earned run.
The Eagles racked up six walks and three stolen bases as a team.
Game 2
Back-to-back doubles from sophomore
Tim Quercia (Monroe Twp, N.J. / Monroe Twp) and senior
John Capozzoli (East Williston, N.Y. / Kellenberg Memorial) gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the third inning before Capozzoli then made in 3-0 when he scored on a wild pitch.
Sophomore
Joe Brong (Somerville, N.J. / Somerville) singled home Capozzoli in the sixth inning to make it a 4-1 Saint Elizabeth advantage.
The Cyclones clawed back into the game in the final inning when they scored two runs and left two on base before Capozzoli secured the save with a strikeout to end the game.
Freshman
Shane O'Neill (Wall, N.J. / Wall) registered his first collegiate win after a spectacular 5.1 inning effort without allowing an earned run and giving up just three hits.
