MORRISTOWN, N.J. – The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (14-6, 3-1 NEAC) played to a split with Cairn University, losing game one, 2-1 before defeating the Highlanders 6-3 in game two on Wednesday evening.
After a scoreless first four innings in game one, the Highlanders plated to runs in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead.
CSE got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as Teya Carr lined a RBI single to cut the lead in half.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brittany Demarest reached on a single with one out, but the Eagles were unable to score the tying run, dropping the game, 2-1.
In game two, the Highlanders struck for two runs in the top of the first inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Sierra Dunn and Kathryn Harrigan had run scoring hits to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
Leading 3-2 in the second, Jontae Patton ripped a two-run single right center, upping the lead to three. Later in the inning, Demarest lined a RBI single to left, giving the Eagles a 6-2 advantage.
Cairn added a run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-3.
On the mound, Alyssa Vega came in relief in the top of the sixth, escaping a jam to keep the lead at three. Vega shut the door down in the top of seventh, giving the Eagles the 6-3 win.
Laura Costello improved to 5-1 on the year while Vega earned her first save of the season.
CSE returns to action on when it hosts Morrisville State for Senior Day on Saturday.
