Eagles Explode for 23 runs, Sweep Regis and Hazelton on Thursday

CLERMONT, F.L. – The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (5-3, 0-0 NEAC) exploded for 23 runs on 26 hits to defeat Regis College, 17-8 in five innings and Penn State Hazleton 6-4 to complete the sweep on Thursday afternoon.

Brittany Demarest finished 3-4 with 5 RBI's.  Teya Carr finished 2-3 with three RBI's and three runs scored.

After the Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the first against Regis, Demarest lined a single down the right field line, clearing the bases to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, the Eagles pushed two more runs across before Carr lined a RBI single up the middle, scoring a run and giving the Eagles a 6-0 advantage.  Later in the inning, Carolina Diaz roped her first hit of the season, driving in two more runs.  The Eagles had six hits and six runs in the inning to take a 9-0 lead into the third.

With two on and one out in the third, Carr smashed a two run double to right center, which was followed by a RBI singles by Jontae Patton and Demarest to open up a 13-0 lead.

Leading 14-1 in the fourth, Marielis Alicea lined a two run single, followed by another Demarest RBI single to give the Eagles a 17-1 lead.

Regis scored seven runs in the fifth but it was not enough as the Eagles took game one, 17-8.

On the mound, Laura Costello earned her first career victory, pitching a complete game and giving up just two earned runs while striking out three.  The 17 runs and 18 hits were both season highs for the Eagles.

In game two against Penn State Hazleton, the Eagles got on the board in the top of the first thanks to a RBI single by Carr.  Four batters later, with the bases loaded and two outs, Elizabeth Unger lined a two-run single to right, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

After a 1-2-3 inning by Alyssa Hampton on the mound, the Eagles kept the offense rolling in the second as Jennifer Tinger smacked a RBI single down the left field line, scoring Ashley VonHorn to up the Eagles lead to 4-0.

Following two runs in the third by the Nittany Lions, the Eagles answered back in the top of the fourth with a RBI double by Carr to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead.  CSE pushed across another run in the fifth inning to retake a four-run advantage. 

In the bottom of the seventh, the Nittany Lions plated two runs and brought the tying run to the plate,

Carr continued her impressive start to the season, finishing the game 4-4 with two RBI's.  Hampton earned her first win of the season, spinning a complete game with two strikeouts.

CSE returns to action on Friday for its final two games in Florida when it takes on Alverno College and The Sage Colleges beginning at 11:45 am.
