Eagles Earn Split in Home Opener

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (10-4, 0-0 NEAC) earned a split in its home opener with Keystone College, falling in game one, 9-3 before downing the Giants, in game two, 5-4.

After Keystone jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, Alyssa Vega settled down on the mound, holding the Giants scoreless over the next three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kim VanSavage lined an infield single, scoring Ashley VonHorn to tie the game at one.

Following two unearned runs in the top of the fifth by Keystone, the Eagles answered back in the bottom of the inning with a Brittany Demarest bases loaded walk, cutting the deficit in half.

Leading 4-3 in the top of the seventh, the Giants plated five runs to up its lead to 9-3, which ended up being the final score.

VonHorn reached base in all four of her plate appearances, including three hits.  Vega finished with two strikeouts in six innings, falling to 4-1 on the season.

Leading 1-0 in game two, Demarest lined a RBI single to left, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.

With the Eagles leading, 3-2 in the fourth Rachael Romer lined a two-run single to center, upping the lead to 5-2.

In the top of the seventh, after cutting the lead to one with the bases loaded and two outs, Alyssa Hampton forced a pop out to the catcher, preserving a 5-4 lead.

Hampton earned her third win of the season on the mound.  Romer finished the game with two hits and two RBI's while Jennifer Tinger reached base with a RBI.

CSE returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Lancaster Bible College for its NEAC opener at 1:00 pm.
