Morristown, N.J. – Sophomore guard
Maria DeVincenzo (Tampa, Fla./Life Center Academy) poured in career-high 22 points while two others contributed double-doubles as the College of Saint Elizabeth captured a 70-68 victory over Cheyney inside St. Joseph's Hall on Monday night.
The Eagles (2-2) trailed 34-33 at the break, and 56-54 after the third quarter. However, Saint Elizabeth opened the final frame on a 10-0 run that included eight points from DeVincenzo and three-point buckets on back-to-back possessions.
Next, the Wolves tied it back up at 64-64 with 3:42 remaining after a three-point bucket from Breazeale. The Eagles took a 70-66 lead after junior forward
Kamani Williams (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) grabbed a tough offensive rebound and buried the put-back with 1:03 left.
Cheyney came within a bucket of the lead late, and had a chance to tie or take the lead in the final 17 seconds, but the Saint Elizabeth defense came through and made two massive stops to secure the victory.
Williams finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds and two assists. DeVincenzo had a season-high 22 points, four assists and two steals while shooting 8-for-13 from the field and 4-for-6 from long distance.
