Ted Thelemaque scored a career high 26 points as The College of Saint Elizabeth's men's basketball team (7-4, 2-1 NEAC) used a second half comeback to earn its second conference win of the season, 96-83 over Gallaudet University on Wednesday evening.
Both teams battled back-and-forth to open the game before the Bison used a 4-0 run to take a 17-12 lead, the largest of the game. With 7:28 remaining in the half,
Ted Thelemaque knocked down a corner three-pointer, his second of the game to tie the score at 28. Following a turnover,
Jason Saldiveri made a breakaway layup, giving the Eagles a two-point lead, its first since the first minute of the game.Â
The teams continued to play even over the final four minutes as
Jordan Simmons made a driving layup with two seconds left in the half to get withing 42-41 heading into the break.
With the game tied at 44 1:30 into the second half, the Eagles ran off the next five points to take a 49-44 lead, its largest of the game. The Bison managed to score the next seven points to regain a 51-49 lead. Gallaudet would lead over the next 10 minutes as it built a 72-67 lead with 7:30 to play in regulation.
Despite the five-point deficit, CSE went on a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 77-72 advantage. Leading 77-74, Thelemaque knocked down back-to-back three pointers, followed by a
Cam Tucker three, to give the Eagles a 86-74, its first double-digit lead with 2:25 remaining. CSE opened as much as a 15-point advantage and made its final seven free throw attempts to take the contest, 96-83.
Thelemaque scored a career 26 points on 8-12 from beyond the arc. The eight three-pointers is a new program record. Tucker added 15 points while
Lance Rhoden finished with 12.
The Eagles finished with six players in double-figures. The 96 points ties a season high for points in a game.
CSE returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Morrisville State at 3 pm.
