MORRISTOWN, N.J. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (6-8, 0-0 NEAC) dropped a pair of games in a non-conference doubleheader against Centenary University, 6-5 and 5-1 on Tuesday afternoon.
After a scoreless first inning in game one, the Cyclones struck for four runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead. The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the third inning as
Teya Carr lined an RBI single to left, scoring
Brittany Demarest to get within three.Â
The Cyclones tacked on a run in the fourth inning to regain a four-run lead. in the top of the sixth,
Marie Goodman threw-out a runner trying to steal second, her first caught stealing of the season from behind the plate.
Trailing by five in the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles loaded the bases with one out before Carr drew a walk to send the tying run to the plate. The following batter, Goodman drew the third straight walk to force in a run and get the Eagles within 6-3. Following an out,
Marielis Alicea battled to a 10-pitch at-bat before drawing another walk, to get CSE within one. With two outs, Gensis Sanchez battled in a tough at-bat, but stuck out swinging to end the game as Centenary held on the for 6-5 win.
Sanchez and Nedwell finished with two hits each in game one while Carr added a hit and two RBI's.
In game two, the Cyclones plated two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. After Centenary added a run in the third, the Eagles put two runners on in the bottom half of the inning, but were unable to close the gap as the Cyclones took a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning.
The Cyclones pushed two more runs across in the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth,
Ashley VonHorn hit a one out triple and later scored on a RBI single by
Rachael Romer to get within 5-1. Both teams were held scoreless in the final inning as the Cyclones held on for the 5-1 win.
Romer finished game two with three hits and a RBI.
CSE returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Penn State Abington in its NEAC opener at 3 pm.
