CLERMONT, Fl. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (4-4, 0-0 NEAC) defeated University of Pittsburg at Greensburg 8-7 before falling in its final game in Florida to Morrisville State, 3-2 on Thursday evening.
After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first by
Alyssa Hampton, the Eagles struck in the bottom half as
Elizabeth Unger lined a RBI single up the middle to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, the Bobcats scraped together four runs to open up a 4-1 lead. The Eagles answered back with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to get within 4-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, with two runners on and two outs,
Genesis Sanchez belted her first career home run, a three-run shot to dead center to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead. The Bobcats regained the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring two-runs to take a 6-5 advantage.Â
In the bottom of the inning, Unger drove a double to left, her third hit of the game, and later scored on a RBI single by
Marie Goodman to tie the game at six. Later in the inning, Hampton grounded out to second, scoring
Carolina Diaz to put the Eagles back in front, 7-6. With a runner on second and two outs in the top of the sixth,
Neckolette Nedwell made a sensational diving catch in center, ending the inning and keeping the Eagles in front by one.
In the top of the seventh, Hampton induced two straight popups to first before a single to right field. With one on and two outs, Hampton induced a groundout to short, ending the game and giving the Eagles the 7-6 victory.
Hampton pitched her second straight complete game and earned her second win of the season. Unger finished the game a perfect 3-3 at the plate while Sanchez and
Rachael Romer had two hits a piece.
In the bottom of the first in game two against Morrisville, the Mustangs put two on with no outs, but
Alyssa Vega worked out of trouble, striking out two to keep the game scoreless. In the bottom of the third, the mustangs scored first, platting two unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Mustangs would tack on a run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles offense finally found some momentum in the top of the sixth inning. CSE used three walks and a bunt single to score its first run of the game with no outs. With two outs, Sanchez blooped an infield single, scoring
Ashley VonHorn to get the Eagles within one, heading to the bottom half of the inning.
Following a scoreless bottom of the sixth, the Eagles got the tying run in scoring position, but could not pish across the tying run, dropping the game, 3-2.
The Eagles finish its spring break trip with a 4-4 record. CSE returns to action on March 25 when it hosts John Jay for a doubleheader beginning at 11 am.
