CARTERET, N.J. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (5-5, 0-0 NEAC) downed John Jay in game one, 12-10 before falling in game two, 13-5 on Sunday afternoon.
After John Jay scored a run in the top of the first, The Eagles answered right back with a RBI triple by
Neckolette Nedwell and a run scoring hit by Taya Carr to take a 2-1 lead.
Following a scoreless second inning, the Eagles struck for thee runs in the bottom of the third, behind RBI hits by
Genesis Sanchez, Nedwell and Carr. In the top of the fourth, John Jay got right back in the game, hitting a three-run home run to cut the lead to 5-4. The Eagles added a run in the bottom of the inning off a RBI groundout by
Brittany Demarest to regain a two-run lead.
In the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs struck for three runs to take a 7-6 lead over the Eagles. CSE came right back in the bottom of the fifth behind a RBI single by
Alyssa Vega to retake an 8-7 lead. With two outs and the bases loaded, Demarest came through in the clutch, lining a two-run single to left center to give the Eagles a 10-7 lead. The next batter,
Rachael Romer, lined a run scoring single to center to give the Eagle a four-run lead, heading to the sixth inning.
The Bulldogs battled back in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to get back within 11-10. In the bottom of the inning, Carr lined a RBI single to left to give the Eagles a 12-10.
In relief,
Marielis Alicea earned her second victory of the season, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up three runs while striking out two. Sanchez and Carr each finished with three hits in the first game.
In the top of the first in game two, the Bulldogs batted around and plated six runners to take an early 6-0 lead. John Jay tacked on three more in the second inning to open up a 9-0 lead. CSE scored its first run of the game, an unearned run to get within eight.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Alyssa Hampton lined a SAC fly to right for the Eagles second run of the game. In the bottom of the fifth, with the bases loaded, Carr smashed a three-run double to right, getting the Eagles within 13-5. However, CSE was unable to tack on any additional runs in the inning, falling in five innings.
CSE returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Cairn University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 pm.
