LEESBURG, Fl. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (3-3, 0-0 NEAC) earned a split in its third day at the Spring Games, defeating Wheelock College 13-1 before falling in a pitcher's duel to Emmanuel College, 1-0 on Wednesday.
Riding the momentum of a two-game win streak, the Eagles struck first in the top half of the first inning on a
Rachael Romer sac fly to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, Romer and
Teya Carr had back to back two-out RBI singles to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.Â
On the mound,
Marielis Alicea was sharp over the first three innings, giving up no runs and scattering just three hits. In the top of the fourth, the offense started rolling, putting the first three batters on and scoring a run to take a 4-0 lead. With one out and two on,
Elizabeth Unger lined a two-run single to center, opening up a six run lead. After CSE added two runs on an error,
Ashley VonHorn and
Alyssa Vega lined RBI singles to left to give the Eagles a 11-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth.
After Wheelock scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, Carr lined a RBI double down the left field line to get the run right back and give the Eagles a 12-1 lead. Two batters later,
Carolina Diaz lined her first career hit down the left field line, scoring Carr to open up a 12 run lead. Alicea held Wheelock scoreless in the fifth inning, finishing the complete game win on the mound.
Alicea picked up her first win of the season, surrendering five hits and an unearned run while striking out four. The Eagles finished with 15 hits as a team, a season high.
In game two against Emmanuel College, the Saints scored an unearned run in the top of the second to take an early 1-0 lead. On the mound, Vega pitched well over the first four innings, giving up just two hits and one run.Â
In the bottom half of the inning,
Marie Goodman ripped a double to left, but was left stranded as the game remained 1-0 through four innings. CSE managed to out hit the Saints 4-3 throughout the first six innings, however, the score remained 1-0 heading into the final inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Saints put a runner on third with one out, but Vega struck out the next two batters to keep the game locked at 1-0. In the final half inning, the Eagles had three good at-bats, but were retired in order, dropping the game, 1-0.
Over the seven innings, Vega gave up just four hits and one unearned run while striking out four.
CSE returns to action on Thursday for its final day when it takes on the University of Pittsburg at Greenberg and Morrisville State, beginning at 4:30 pm.
