CLERMONT, Fl. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (2-2, 0-0 NEAC) used two dramatic comebacks for its first victories of the season, 9-8Â and 7-6 over New England College on Monday evening.
In the top of the first inning,
Marielis Alicea mowed down the Pilgrims 1-2-3 to open the game. After the Eagles were sent down in order in the bottom of the inning, New England plated three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, the Eagles loaded the bases with two outs, but
Jurnee Reid hit a line drive back to the pitcher, ending the inning.
New England added a run in the third and three in the fourth to open up a 7-0 lead. After New England added a run in the sixth, the Eagles got on the board in the bottom half.Â
Teya Carr lined a double off the right center field wall and later came around to score on an error. After loading the bases,
Brittany Demarest lined a two-run single up the middle, cutting the deficit to 8-3.Â
Neckolette Nedwell and and
Elizabeth Unger added RBI's in the inning to get the Eagles within 8-5 heading into the final inning.
After a shutdown inning by
Alyssa Vega on the mound, the Eagles put the first two runners on to send the tying run up with no outs. Following a
Rachael Romer single to load the bases,
Ashley VonHorn ripped a double to center, scoring two runs to get within 8-7. The next batter,
Genesis Sanchez, lined a run scoring single to right to tie the game at eight. After an intentional walk to Demarest to load the bases, Unger lined a sac fly to left, scoring VonHorn to give the Eagles a dramatic 9-8 come from behind victory.
Vega earned her first career victory after giving up just one run and three hits over the final three innings. Demarest and Sanchez each finished with two hits in the game.Â
In the bottom of the first in game two, the Pilgrims got on the board first, scoring six runs, three of which were unearned to take an early 6-0 lead. After both teams were held scoreless over the next two innings, the Eagles threatened in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded and no outs. With no outs, Romer drew a bases loaded walk for the Eagles first run of the game. VonHorn followed up with a rbi single to slice the deficit to four. The Eagles added one more run in the inning to get within 6-3.
After holding the Pilgrims scoreless in the fifth, Unger drew a bases loaded walk to get the Eagle within 6-4. The next batter, Nedwell, lined a sac fly to center to cut the deficit to one. CSE stranded two runners in the inning but trailed just one heading to the bottom of the sixth inning.
Alyssa Hampton worked a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth to give the Eagles its final crack at completing another comeback. To start the seventh,
Teya Carr and Hampton connected for back to back singles to give the Eagles two on and no outs. Following Romer reaching on a fielder's choice to load the bases, Sanchez ripped a two-run single with two outs, giving the Eagles a 7-6 lead.
In the bottom half of the seventh, the Pilgrims hit a one-out double to put the tying run on base. Following a groundout to third, Hampton induced a flyout to center, capping off another dramatic comeback, 7-6.
Hampton picked up her first career win in game two, spinning a complete game. Carr finished with three hits while Sanchez added two hits and four RBI's.
Following an off day tomorrow, the Eagles return to action on Wednesday with games against Wheelock College and Emmanuel College beginning at 9 am.
