Eagles Drop First Two Games in Florida

CLERMONT, Fl. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (0-2, 0-0 NEAC) dropped its opening two games to start the season, 11-3 to Mount Ida and 16-6 to Saint Vincent College on Sunday afternoon.

After the Eagles got sent down in order in the top of the first inning, Mount Ida struck in the bottom half, scoring three runs to take a 3-0 lead.  After a quiet second, Genesis Sanchez lined a single to center, the fist hit of the game for CSE.   In the bottom of the third Mount Ida tacked on three more runs to open up a 6-0 lead.

CSE's bats finally came alive in the top of the fourth as Elizabeth Unger and Neckolette Nedwell had back to back hits, followed by a Marie Goodman walk to load the bases with one out.  With two outs, freshman Brittany Demarest lined a bases clearing double, her first career hit to cut the deficit in half at 6-3.

In the bottom of the fourth, Mount Ida hit back to back home runs to extend the lead to 8-3.  In the bottom of the fifth, Mount Ida added three additional runs to take the game 11-3 in five innings. 

In the second game against Saint Vincent, Alyssa Vega, making her first career start on the mound, mowed the Bearcats down 1-2-3 to open the game.  In the bottom of the second, the Eagles threatened with second and third, but left the runner stranded to remain scoreless.

Both pitchers controlled the game through the first three innings, allowing just one hit each.  In the top of the fourth, the Bearcats got on the board first, hitting a home run to right center to take a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom half of the inning, Marie Goodman lined a RBI single up the middle, scoring Nedwell to tie the game at one.

In the top of the fifth, Saint Vincent regained the lead with back to back solo home runs to take a 3-1 lead.  Two batter later, Genesis Sanchez made the defensive play of the game, a diving catch in the outfield to save a run.  Saint Vincent added four more runs in the inning to take an 8-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth. 

In the bottom half of the inning, Demarest drove a ball off the wall in dead center, scoring Rachael Romer to get the Eagles within six.  The next batter, Elizabeth Unger, lined a single off the left field wall for the Eagles third run of the game.  In the top of the sixth, the Bearcats belted a three-run homer to up the lead to 11-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles rallied for three runs to get within 11-6.  In the top of the seventh, Saint Vincent scored five runs to take a 16-6 lead.  CSE was unable to mount a last inning comeback, dropping the game by ten. 

On the day, Nedwell finished with three hits.  Demarest added two hits and four RBI's while Goodman had two hits, a RBI and a run scored.

CSE returns to action on Monday when it takes on New England College at 4:30 and 7 pm.
