Women's Basketball Falls in Final Seconds at NJCU

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's women's basketball team (3-3, 2-0 NEAC) fell in the final seconds at New Jersey City University, 73-70 on Monday evening.

The Eagles came out strong in the first quarter, opening up a nine-point lead, the largest it would have in the game.  CSE took a 25-18 lead into the second period behind six points from Rakiyah Sellers and Maria DeVincenzo. 

After NJCU tied the game at 31 with 2:22 remaining in the first half, the Eagles rattled off the final six points of the half to take a 37-31 lead into the break.

The Gothic Knights controlled the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 24-16 to take a 55-53 lead into the final 10 minutes.

After NJCU opened up a 58-53 lead, CSE scored the next eight points to regain a 61-58 lead.  Despite the Eagles taking a 65-60 lead, the Gothic Knights came back with the next six points to take a 66-65 lead with 2:31 remaining in regulation.  

20 Seconds later, Diane Nieves nailed a clutch three-point to give the Eagles a 68-66 lead.  NJCU came back to regain a one-point lead, but Kamani Williams made a layup with 1:20 remaining to give the Eagles a 70-69 advantage.  The Gothic Knights managed to regain the lead at the 48 second mark, and made two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to take the contest, 73-70.

DeVincenzo finished with a team high 21 points and three rebounds.  Williams added 12 points and a career high 19 rebounds while Deja Ingram finished with 17 points and eight rebounds.

CSE has a four-week layoff for winter break and returns to action on January 9th when it hosts Gallaudet University at 4 pm.
