Morristown, N.J. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's women's volleyball team (1-4, 1-0 NEAC) picked up its first victory of the season, defeating Byrn Athyn College 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-23), on Thursday evening.
Playing in its first home game of the season, the Eagles stormed out of the game, scoring eight straight points behind three service aces by
Jessica Garreffa. The Eagles continued to up the lead and would not allow the Lions to get back within dingle digits, taking the set 25-15.
In the second set, the Eagles rode the hot start once again, quickly opening up a five-point lead. While the Lions fought back midway through the set, CSE kept pushing the lad, gaining a seven point lead at 21-14. The Eagles managed to win four of the next six points to take the second set, 25-16.
Up two sets to none, the Eagles continued the momentum in the third set, ripping off seven straight points to take an 11-2 lead. Leading 15-5, Maura Faurley perfectly placed a spike, opening up an 11 point lead. Despite opening a 12 point lead, the Lions scored eight straight points to cut the lead to 23-21. After losing two of the next three points, Farley put the game away, converting her sixth kill of the game, giving the Eagles the 25-23 set win.
Garreffa finished the match with 23 digs, seven aces, and seven assists. Farley added six services aces and five assists while
Yasmin'na Muhammad had eight kills. The Eagles finished with a season high 20 service aces.
CSE returns to action on Sunday when it hosts a tri-match with Penn State Brandywine and Culinary Institute, beginning at 10 am.
