Eagles Split Home-Tri Match

Morristown, N.J. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's women's volleyball team (3-4, 1-0 NEAC) split a pair of matches in a home tri-meet, defeating Culinary Institute, 3-0 before falling to Penn State Brandywine, 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.

In the first match against the Culinary Institute, the Eagles rolled to a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-14, 25-11). Yasmin'na Muhammad paced the Eagles with a game high nine kills and three service aces. Jessica Garreffa chipped in with nine digs and four service aces while Christy Marte had 14 assists.

The Eagles did not let the early morning effect their play, scoring 11 of the first 14 points to take an 11-3 lead. The Steels managed to chip away and get within 21-17, however the Eagles won the final four points to take the first set, 25-17.

CSE ramped up its offense in the second set, scoring 11 of the first 15 and 14 of the first 19 points to take a nine point lead. Leading 19-10, Garreffa served four straight points to give CSE a commanding 23-10 lead. On match point, Marley Farley put away the game winning kill, giving the Eagles a 25-14 set win.

Leading 9-5 in the third set, Muhammad connected for four straight points to open up a 13-5 lead. CSE used a five-point run late in the set to blow the match open at 25, before taking the final set, 25-11.

In game two, the Eagles fell to Penn State Brandywine 3-1 (10-25, 20-25, 29-31). Muhammad led the Eagles in the second match, finishing with eight kills and three service aces Christy Marte added 14 digs and six assists while Farley finished with 13 digs and 11 assists.

After taking an early 3-2 lead, the Nittany Lions ran off a 17-5 run to take a 19-8 lead in the first set. CSE could not manage a late rally, dropping the set 25-10.

After falling in the second set 25-20, the Eagles used a big rally in the third set, trailing by five midway through, CSE ran off six straight points to take a 18-17 lead. Both teams battled back and forth over the next 15 points as the game was tied on match point. With the score tied at 29, the Nittany Lions converted the next to points, taking the final set.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday when it travels to Lancaster Bible for an 11 am tri-match.
