Washington, D.C. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (3-15, 0-4 NEAC) fell in a pair of conference game to Gallaudet University, 10-9 in extra innings and 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.
CSE got on the board first in game one as
Elizabeth Unger drove in two in the top of the second to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. After holding Gallaudet scoreless through the first to innings, the Bison struck in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs to take a 5-2 lead.
The Eagles added an unearned run in the fourth inning, which was followed by a RBI single by
Danesha Triplett to get back within one.
Victoria Ciallella lined a RBI single in the top of the fifth to tie the game at five. Unger would add a sac fly later in the inning to regain a one-run lead for the Eagles.
Gallaudet battled back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs to take a 9-6 lead. Down to their final three outs, Unger drove in Ciallella in the seventh to cut the deficit to two. With two outs and a runner on, Triplett belted her first home run of the season, tying the game at nine. CSE held the Bison scoreless in the bottom of the inning to send the game to extras. After the Eagles failed to score in the eighth, Gallaudet scored a run in the bottom of the inning to take the game, 10-9.Â
After Gallaudet took a 1-0 in the first inning of game two,
Caitlin Gibson lined a RBI single in the top of the second to tie the score at one. The Bison scored three runs in the third inning to gain a 4-1 lead.
After both teams went scoreless over the next two innings, the Eagles once again ran off a seventh inning rally.
Rebecca Agrelo started it off by drawing a bases loaded walk to slice the deficit to two.
Rachael Romer followed up, smashing a two-run double to tie the score at four. CSE could not manage to send another game into extra innings as Jenny Mendis clubbed a solo home run in the bottom of the inning, giving Gallaudet a 5-4 victory.
Romer finished the day with four hits and two RBI's. Ciallella also added four hits while Triplett had two hits including her first home run of the season.
CSE returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Wilson College for a 12 pm start.
