Clermont, Fl. – The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (0-2, 0-0 NEAC) dropped its opening two games of the season at THE Spring Games in Florida, 10-2 to Hussin University and 12-3 to Finlandia University on Sunday.
After a scoreless first inning, Husson struck first, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. After the Eagles were sent down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning, Husson added a run in the third inning to open up a five-run lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Megan Lapinski and Victoria Ciallella had back to back singles, but were stranded on base as the Eagles were held scoreless in the inning. Husson added two more in the top of the fifth inning to take a 7-0 lead.
After Husson added three more in the sixth inning, the Eagles finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh as Rachael Romer lined a RBI single up the middle. Elizabeth Unger followed suit with a RBI single of her own for the Eagles second run of the game. CSE battled to its final out, but left the bases loaded as Husson took the game, 10-2.
Unger and Lapinski each finished 2-4. Unger added a RBI while Romer had a hit and a RBI. Marielis Alicia had four strikeouts on the mound for the Eagles.
In game two, Finlandia jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Eagles showed life at the plate in the second inning, loading the bases with one out, but were unable to score any runs. In the top of the third inning, CSE finally broke through as Romer lined an RBI single to right, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
In the bottom of the third inning, Finlandia plated eight runs to open up an 11-1 lead. In the top of the fourth inning, Caitlin Gibson lined her first career inside the park home run to right field, slicing the deficit to eight. Despite the runs, CSE was unable to muster any other offense, dropping the contest, 12-3 in five innings.
Romer and Passaro had two hits apiece in game two while Gibson hit her first home run of the season, an inside the park to right field.
CSE returns to action on Monday when it takes on Elizabethtown College and the University of Mount Union.
