Morristown, N.J. – The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (3-11, 0-0 NEAC) dropped a doubleheader in its season opener to NJCU, 8-1 and 7-5, on Thursday afternoon.
After a scoreless top of the first inning in game one, the Eagles used three walks in the bottom of the inning to load the bases with two outs. With Danesha Triplett at the dish, a wild pitch allowed Rachael Romer to score the first run of the game for the Eagles.
In the top of the second, Kayla Clarke homered to left to give the Gothic Knights a 2-1 lead. NJCU would tack on another run in the inning to take a 3-1 advantaged into the third inning.
CSE's offense stumbled over the final four innings, totaling just two hits. NJCU added five more runs and took game one, 8-1.
After the Eagles put the first two batters on in the second game, Megan Lapinski ripped a triple to right center, scoring two and giving the eagles a 2-0 lead. Marielis Alicea added a RBI double later in the inning, opening up a 5-1 lead for CSE after the first inning.
The Gothic Knights added a run in the second and three in the fifth to tie the score at five. After the Eagles went scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, NJCU added two more runs in the top of the sixth to take its first lead of the game at 7-5. CSE was unable to score any runs in the final two innings, dropping the contest by two.
Marie Goodman finished the day with two hits while Megan Lapinski added a hit and two RBI's in game two.
CSE returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Penn State Abington at 1 pm for its NEAC opener.
