Eagles Upset Lions in Wild Game, Advance to Second Round of NEAC Playoffs

Bryn Athyn, Pa. - Rakiyah Sellers hit a game tying three-pointer to send the game to overtime, and the Eagles dominated the final five minutes, as the College of Saint Elizabeth's women's basketball team (16-10) advanced to the second round of the NEAC playoffs with a 95-89 win over Bryn Athyn College on Tuesday evening.

CSE's leading scorer, Jasmine Poole, had another quality game for the Eagles, finishing with 31 points, ten rebounds, seven assists, and four steals. Danesha Triplett dominated down low, finishing with 15 points and 15 rebounds while Deja Ingram added 12 points and 12 rebounds. Rakiyah Sellers added 11 points, including the two most important three-pointers of the game.

In the first quarter, Poole scored the first four points of the game as the Eagles took an early 9-2 lead over the Lions. CSE upped the lead to as much as six before the Lions went on a 6-0 run to tie the score at 19 after the first period. Poole scored eight of the 19 first quarter points.

Lache Robinson and Poole buried three-pointers to open the second quarter to give the Eagles a 25-19 lead. After the Lions cut the lead to five, Sellers swished home a corner three to give the Eagles its largest lead of the game at 29-21. Following a timeout, the Lions went on a 6-0 run to get back within two. Both teams traded baskets for the remaining four minutes as the Eagles took a 39-38 lead into halftime.

CSE started the third quarter strong, going on a 7-2 run to take a 46-40 lead with 7:24 remaining. Despite the Eagles taking as much as a seven-point lead, the Lions came back with an 11-2 run to take its first lead of the game at 55-52. CSE struggled the remainder of the quarter as Bryn Athyn took a 67-57 lead into the final ten minutes.

Determined to not have its season end, the Eagles scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to get within two. After the Lions regained a five-point lead, Poole scored the next four points to get the Eagles within one with 2:30 to play. Trailing by two with 40 seconds remaining, Sellers banged home a corner three-pointer to give the Eagles a 78-77 lead. Bryan Athyn came right down the floor to take a one-point lead and hit two free-throws a few seconds later to take an 81-78 lead with eight seconds to play. Following a timeout, the Eagles ran a screen for Sellers, who launched a three from the same spot as the previous one, burring the game tying bucket with .6 seconds remaining, sending the game to overtime.

Riding all the momentum into overtime, CSE scored the first five points to take a 86-81 lead. The Lions fought back to get within one but Poole knocked down two clutch free-throws to give the Eagles a 90-87 lead with 57 seconds remaining. Following a Lions bucket, LaChe Robinson nailed a three-pointer to give the Eagles a four-point. Sellers knocked down the final two-free throws of the game as the Eagles completed the comeback, taking the game by six.

The win marks the first NEAC playoff win in school history. CSE moves on to the second round as they take on host SUNY Poly on Saturday at 2 pm.
