Utica, N.Y. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's women's basketball team (16-11, 13-7 NEAC) had its incredible season come to an end in the semi-finals of the NEAC Playoffs with a 78-50 defeat to SUNY Poly on Saturday afternoon.
In her final career game,
Jasmine Poole paced the Eagles with 16 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
Danesha Triplett added 19 points, finishing with 994 career points.
Despite playing in its biggest game of their careers, the Eagles looked sharp early, taking a 6-2 lead three minutes into the game. Over the next three minutes, the Wildcats scored the next six points to take its first lead of the game at 8-6. With 3:38 to go in the quarter, Poole had an up and under layup, drawing the foul and converting to give the Eagles a 9-8 lead. Over the final three minutes, the Wildcats outscored the Eagles 7-5 to take a 15-14 lead into the second quarter. Eagles held the Wildcats to just 23.5% from the floor in the first quarter.
CSE's offense struggled over the first four minutes of the second quarter, scoring just two points as the Wildcats took a 21-16 lead. The Wildcats extended the lead over the next three minutes as the Eagles found themselves down 27-18 with three minutes remaining. CSE was unable to make a push to end the first half, taking a 33-22 deficit into halftime.
Early in the third period, Triplett added a layup and a foul, cutting the deficit to 35-27. The Wildcats managed to score eight of the next ten points to open up its largest lead of the game at 43-29. CSE could not stop the bleeding as SUNY Poly scored the next eight points to take a 51-29 lead with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter. The Wildcats ended the quarter on a 14-5 run to take a 65-34 lead into the final quarter.
CSE battled in the final ten minutes of its season, but could not manage a rally, falling to the Wildcats, 78-50.
The Eagles season comes to an end with a 16-11 record. The 16 wins are the most in school history and Tuesday's win was the first playoff win since the 2009-10 season.
