Eagles Power Past Bloodhounds for Season Opening Win

New York, N.Y. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's women's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 NEAC) downed John Jay College in the season opener, 71-39 on Friday evening.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively as the Bloodhounds took an early 7-6 lead six minutes into the first quarter.  Over the next five minutes, the Eagles held John Jay scoreless while Deja Ingram scored five straight points to give the Eagles a 12-7 lead.  The Bloodhounds scored the final three points as CSE took a 12-10 lead into the second quarter.

In the second period, CSE's defense was suffocating, holding the Bloodhounds without a field goal and just four points.  CSE also forced 10 turnovers in the quarter.  Ingram continued to dominate in the half, scoring seven of her 12 points in the second quarter.  Rakiyah Sellers added six points in the half as CSE took a 31-14 lead into the halftime break.

CSE continued their dominance to open the second half, scoring the first six points to open up a 37-14 lead.  The Eagles would not allow the Bloodhounds to go on any run in the quarter as CSE scored six of the final eight points to take a 46-21 lead into the final ten minutes.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles ran off an 8-0 run in the first 2:30 minutes to blow the game open at 54-21.  CSE would open up as much as a 34 point lead before taking the contest, 71-39.

Ingram dominated on both ends of the floor, finishing with 18 points, nine rebounds, and five steals.  In her collegiate debut, Kamani Williams added 16 points and nine rebounds while Sellers had 11 points and four rebounds.

CSE returns to action on Monday when it travels to Manhattanville College for a 6 pm tip.
