Offense explodes in Second Game to Split a Pair in Myrtle

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (1-3, 0-0 NEAC) dropped the first game of the day to Greensboro College, 9-1, before exploding on offense and downing Wentworth Institute 12-9 on Tuesday.

In game one against Greensboro College, Marielis Alicea threw a 1-2-3 top of the first inning. During the bottom half of the inning, the Eagles scored the first run of the game as Heather Passaro crossed home plate off an error by Greensboro's second baseman.

In the second inning, Greensboro loaded the bases with no outs, but Alicea buckled down, holding the Pride to just one run in the inning. In the top of the third inning, the Pride plated three runs, opening up a 4-1 lead.

After Greensboro added a run in the fourth, the Pride added three more in the top of the fifth inning to open up an 8-1 lead. CSE continued to battle, but could not muster any offense in the later innings, dropping the game 9-1 in six innings.


In game two, Wentworth got their offense going in the bottom of the second inning, scoring six runs to take a 6-0 lead. The Eagles started clawing their way back in the top of the third, scoring two runs thanks to run scoring singles by Rachael Romer and Allie Jenkins.

In the top of the fourth, the Eagles loaded the bases but were unable to score as Wentworth held a four run lead.  In the top of the sixth inning, after the Eagles got a run back, Samatha Albertson roped a triple down the line, scoring two and cutting the deficit to one. Jenkins followed up with a SAC fly to tie the score at six.

In the top of the seventh, the Eagles loaded the bases with no outs, but followed up with two straight outs. With two outs in the inning, Romer drew a bases loaded walk to put the Eagles ahead 7-6. The next batter, Samantha Albertson, smashed her second triple of the game, clearing the bases and giving the Eagles a commanding 10-6 lead. CSE tacked on two more runs in the inning to take a 12-6 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Wentworth scored three runs but were unable to get any closer as the Eagles took the contest 12-9.

Albertson lead the Eagles on offense, finishing 3-7 with two triples and five runs batted in. Passaro continued her stellar start to the season, finishing 6-8 with three runs scored on the day. Jenkins earned her first career win on the mound in game two, throwing a complete game while striking out two batters.

CSE returns to action on Wednesday when they take on Medaille College at 9:30 am.
