Eagles Sweep Home Opener vs Baruch

Morristown, N.J. – The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (5-6, 0-0 NEAC) was on the winning end of two one-run games, sweeping Baruch College, 5-4 and 8-7 on Saturday afternoon.

In game one, the Eagles struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first off RBI's by Samantha Albertson and Kayla Gonzalez. Baruch clawed their way back in the top of the second, scoring two runs of their own to tie the score up.

In the top of the third inning, Baruch plated two more runs across to take a 4-2 lead over the Eagles. Baruch held the Eagles down at bat over the next two innings as Baruch held a 4-2 lead heading into the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Allie Jenkins blooped a RBI double down the right field line to get the Eagles within 4-3. With two outs, Gonzalez grounded a ball to short, which was booted by Baruch, scoring Jenkins and tying the score at 4.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles loaded the bases with one out. Rachael Romer hit a sac fly to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead. Baruch threatened in the top of the seventh, but Romer held Baruch scoreless, giving the Eagles a 5-4 win.

Romer earned her first career win for the Eagles in game one, throwing a complete game while striking out seven.

In game two, Baruch scored two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Albertson lined a RBI single to left, getting the Eagles to within one. After a shaky first inning, Jenkins settled down, holding Baruch scoreless over the next three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, Christina Scolaro ripped a double to left center, scoring a run and tying the score at two. The next batter, Sharolin Sanders, lined a single to center, scoring two and giving the Eagles a 4-2 lead. After adding another run, Jenkins lined a single to right, driving in the sixth run of the game for the Eagles. Following a walk to load the bases, Alyssabel Garcia smacked a two-run double to right center, opening up an 8-2 lead for CSE.

Baruch chipped away at the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs to cut the Eagles lead to 8-4. After a scoreless bottom of the inning by the Eagles, Baruch added two more runs in the top of the sixth to get within 8-6. In the top of the seventh, Baruch added a two-out run, getting to within one. With a runner on second and two outs, Jenkins induced a groundout to shortstop, giving the Eagles the one-run victory. Jenkins picked up her third victory on the season, a complete game.

Heather Passaro finished the day 4-7 with three runs scored. Albertson added a solid day, finishing 3-6 at the plate while driving in two runs.

CSE returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Rosemont College for a 3 pm start.
