Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (3-4, 0-0 NEAC) exploded on offense, scoring 32 runs over two games, leading to a 20-5 win over Summit University and a 12-4 win over NJCU on Thursday afternoon.
In the top of the first against Summit University, Heather Passaro continued her hot start to the season, lining a triple to center field. Rachael Romer followed up with an RBI single up the middle. Three batters later, Christina Scolaro knocked an RBI single in her first at bat of the season to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Summit fought back in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs of their own to tie the score at 2. In the top of the second, Romer blooped a double down the right field line, scoring two, Allie Jenkins followed suit with a two run triple, opening up a four run lead for CSE. The Eagles would add another run in the inning to take a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the second.
In the top of the third inning, after the Eagles scored a run and loaded the bases, Samantha Albertson hit an inside the park grand slam, giving CSE a 13-2 lead. Later in the inning, Alyssabel Garcia lined an RBI single, which was followed up with a two run double by Marielis Alicea. CSE added three more runs in the inning to take a 19-2 lead into the bottom of the third inning.
CSE would add one more run, taking the game 20-5 in five innings. Alicea spun a complete game on the mound for the Eagles, pitching five innings while striking out four and giving up just three earned runs. The Eagles scored 12 runs in the third inning and 20 runs in the game, both season highs.
In game 2 against NJCU, the Gothic Knights scored the first two runs to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the second inning, the Eagles offense got going again as Alicea smashed a two-run triple to right center, tying the score. After the Eagles added three more runs, Albertson roped a triple to right center, giving CSE a four run lead. CSE added another run in the inning to take a 7-2 lead after two innings.
CSE continued their offensive onslaught in the third inning, scoring three runs to up the lead to 10-2. NJCU managed to get two runs back over the next two innings, cutting the lead to 10-4. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kayla Gonzalez smacked a RBI triple down the right field line, opening up a seven run lead for the Eagles. The next batter, Alicea, lined a RBI single to center, giving the Eagles a 12-4 victory.
Jenkins picked up her second win of the season, throwing four innings, giving up just two earned runs while striking out one. Continuing her sizzling start to the season, Passaro finished 4-5 on the day with six runs scored and three runs batted in. Romer finished 3-5 with 5 RBI's while Albertson finished 3-7 with 6 RBI's.
CSE returns to action on Friday for their final day of play in Myrtle Beach, taking on Mount Aloysius at 9:30 am and St. Joseph's L.I. at 11:30 am.
