Eagles Edged by Express on Senior Day

Morristown, N.J. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's basketball team (9-14, 9-9 NEAC) dropped a heartbreaker to the Express of Wells, 73-72 on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon.

Deja Ingram had another outstanding performance, finishing 18 points and 12 rebounds. On senior day, the seniors did not disappoint, as Ashley Pledger finished with 18 points, including knocking down all four of her three-point attempts. Amerisse Rogers added seven points and six assists while Sharolin Sanders chipped in with six points. Ashida Cooper lead the Express with 26 points.

After falling behind by ten points midway through the second quarter, the Eagles used a 19-8 run to regain a 39-38 lead in the final minute of the half. The Express added a late bucket to take a 40-39 lead into the break. Determined not to get off to another slow shooting start, the Eagles finished the first half shooting 60.7% from the floor.

After trading buckets to start the third quarter, the Express opened up a seven point lead with three minutes remaining in the quarter. With 1:34 remaining, Pledger knocked down her third consecutive three-pointer to slice the deficit to four.

The Eagles had another strong showing in the fourth quarter, getting to within one with 6:45 remaining. After Wells reopened a seven point lead, the Eagles used a 9-0 run to take a 70-68 lead with three minutes remaining. CSE could not hold the lead as Wells scored the next four points to take a 72-70 lead with 39 seconds remaining. With 22 seconds left in regulation, Rogers made a game-tying layup to square the score at 72. CSE could not force overtime however, as Wells made a last second free throw to take the contest by one.

Before the game, Seniors Ashley Pledger, Sharolin Sanders and Amerisse Rogers were honored with a framed plaque for their contributions to the Eagles basketball team over the past four seasons.

CSE returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Penn State Berks for a 7 pm start.
