Jason Saldiveri scored a career high 39 points to propel the College of Saint Elizabeth's men's basketball team (2-2, 1-1 NEAC) to a thrilling 96-92 overtime win over Penn State Abington on Saturday afternoon.
Saldiveri shot a sensational 65% from the floor while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out four assists.
Roland Romano had the best game of his young career, finishing with 18 points and 14 rebounds while
Marlon Hart added 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Romano and Saldiveri scored the first eight points of the game for the Eagles, however Abington took an early 13-8 lead. The Eagles then ran off a 14-0 run, thanks to four Abington turnovers in a minute span, to take a 22-13 lead. After the Nittany Lions chipped away at the lead, Saldiveri drained a corner jumper to give the Eagles a 27-20 lead.
CSE's offense went cold over the next four minutes, scoring just one point as Abington tied the score at 28. After another Saldiveri field goal,
Cameron Tucker swished home a three-pointer from the top of the key to regain a five point lead for CSE. Both teams battled for the remaining four minutes before Saldiveri nailed a buzzer beating jumper, giving the Eagles the 43-40 halftime lead.
Four minutes into the second half, Romano grabbed an offensive rebound, put back the bucket and got fouled, to give the Eagles a 52-42 lead. CSE's offense scored just two points over the next three minutes as Abington ran off a 14-2 run to take a 58-56 lead. Trailing 68-65 with 6:53 remaining in the game, Tucker banged home his third three pointer of the game, tying the score at 68.
Both teams traded baskets over the next four minutes before Saldiveri hit a clutch free throw to give CSE a 77-76 lead with 1:31 remaining. Following a
Gabriel Valerio free throw with 36 seconds in regulation, John Ryan made a layup for Abington with 18 seconds remaining to tie the score and send the game into overtime.
Continuing their dominating games, Saldiveri and Romano scored the first four points of overtime to open up a 82-78 CSE lead. Leading by two with 1:28 to go, Hart made a fast break layup to give the Eagles an 88-84 lead. CSE held a three point lead with 38 seconds in overtime before Nick Brown slammed home a dunk, and got fouled, before missing the game tying free throw. The Eagles hit three of four free throws over the final 16 seconds, sealing the four point victory.
The Eagles return to action on Sunday when they travel to Bryn Athyn for a 2 pm start.
