Bryn Athyn, Pa. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's men's basketball team (2-3, 1-2 NEAC) dropped a nail-biter to Bryn Athyn College, 69-68 on Sunday afternoon.
Fresh off a 39-point performance on Saturday,
Jason Saldiveri led all scorers with 21 points.
Roland Romano added his second straight double-double, finishing with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Troy Steed paced the Lions with 17 points and nine rebounds.
With the game tied at 9-9 in the first half, Bryn Athyn used an 11-0 run to gain a 21-9 advantage with 9:51 left in the half. Trailing by nine with three minutes remaining in the half, the Eagles used a quick 6-0 run to get within three. After a Lions bucket,
Marlon Hart sank a jumper with five seconds remaining to slice the Eagles deficit to 33-30 heading into halftime.
Two minutes into the second half, Saldiveri knocked down a jumper to give the Eagles their first lead in 20 minutes, 37-35. Over the next four minutes, the Lions used a 12-0 run to regain a 10-point lead. The Eagles refused to go away, however, using a 10-2 run at the 7:45 mark to get back within four. With the Lions leading by eight with 3:32 remaining in the game, Saldiveri scored seven of the next nine Eagles points to take a 68-67 lead.
CSE could not hold the lead for long as Steed made a dunk with 1:48 remaining to give the Lions a 69-68 lead. Despite both teams going scoreless over the next 1:30, the Eagles found themselves with the ball and a chance to win the game. With seven seconds in regulation, Saldiveri drove to the lane, missing the layup, which was followed by an offensive rebound by Romano, but he could not convert the put back, giving the Lions the one point victory.
CSE returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Drew University for a 4 p.m. tip.
