Morristown, N.J. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's men's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 NEAC) earned its historic first-ever victory in program history over King's College N.Y, 80-65 on Sunday evening.
Freshman
Jason Saldiveri dominated from the start, finishing with a game-high 19 points and 13 rebounds.
Jordan Simmons added 14 points on 6-9 shooting while
Marlon Hart poured in 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
First game jitters showed early for the Eagles as King's College took an early 12-9 lead seven minutes into the game. CSE's defense took over in the next four minutes, forcing four turnovers in route to a 15-0 run, giving the Eagles a 24-12 lead. After King's cut the lead to six, the Eagles ran off a 10-0 run to open up a 16-point lead. Both teams traded baskets for the rest of the half as CSE took a 44-26 lead into the break.
Three minutes into the second half,
Cameron Tucker drained his first three-pointer of the game to open up a 24-point lead for the Eagles. With 15 minutes remaining in the game, the Lions trimmed the lead to 19 before CSE went on a 10-3 run to open up the largest lead of the game at 26. The Lions attempted a late comeback as the got to within 15, but it was not enough as the Eagles took the game 80-65.
Before the game, CSE President, Helen J. Streubert threw the ceremonial tip-off signaling the start of the men's basketball program.
With the win,
Tom Wagenblast picked up his first collegiate win as a head coach. CSE returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to New Rochelle for a 7 p.m. start.
