Myrtle Beach Day 4: Hot Bats Give Eagles a Split

Myrtle Beach, S.C.- The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (2-6, 0-0 NEAC) used their hot bats to defeat Penn State Altoona 15-13 before losing to Principia College 12-8 on Friday.

The Eagles bats broke out immediately as Alexandria Garcia singled up the middle scoring Valerie Lasko. Alyssabel Garcia followed suit by driving a single off the right center field wall scoring Alex and giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead. In the top of the second, Altoona pushed 3 runs across before Kelly Chambers launched a 3-run home run to give the Lions a 6-2 lead.

In the bottom of the second, the Eagles loaded the bases with no outs after 3 consecutive singles.  Christina Scolaro followed with a 2-run single to right center to cut the deficit to 6-5. Following an RBI ground out by Alex Garcia, Kayla Gonzalez drove a single to left field to tie the game up at 6. Next batter Alesandria DeSapio reached on an error by the right fielder while driving in a run to give the Eagles a 7-6 lead. Morgen Sim added a 2 run single to center to give the Eagles a 7 run inning and take a 9-6 lead into the 3rd.

Altoona would claw their way back in the game in the 3rd, scoring 3 runs to tie the game up at 9. In the bottom of the 3rd, Alex Garcia singled home Grace Bailey to regain a 10-9 lead. The Eagles would add one more run in the inning and take an 11-9 lead into the 4th inning.  The game continued to go back and forth as

Altoona tied the score up at 11 in the 5th. The Eagles would not give up however as Scolaro ripped a RBI double off the left-center field wall to give the Eagles a 12-11 lead. The Garcia sister followed with back to back RBI singles to give CSE a 14-11 lead. DeSapio continued the hits parade by lining a RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 15-11.  Despite Altoona scoring 3 runs in the 7th, the Eagles held on and won the game 15-14.
 
The Eagles bats continued to rake in game 2 as Alex Garcia lined an RBI single for the first run of the game. 2 batters later, Alesandria DeSapio lined an RBI single up the middle for a 2-0 lead. Morgan Sim added a 2 run single later in the inning to open up a 4-0 Eagles lead. Following an inside the park home run by Principia, Nicole Morera made a beautiful diving catch for the first out of the inning.

Leading off the top of the 2nd, Scolaro smacked a line drive to the right center field gap, resulting in an inside the park home run. Next batter Alex Garcia smashed a home run to dead center as the Eagles went back to back for the first time this season. CSE continued to play solid defense in the 2nd inning as Alyssabel Garcia gunned down a runner trying to steal second. After scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd, Principia hit an inside the park grand slam to take an 8-6 lead over the Eagles.

Scolaro got one of the runs back next inning, lining an RBI single to left to get the Eagles to within 8-7.  With the score 9-8 in the bottom of the 6th, Principia added 3 runs to take a 12-8 lead. The Eagles were unable to score any more runs and dropped the contest 12-8.

Christina Scolaro finished the day 6-9 with 5 RBI's including an inside the park home run. Alex Garcia also added her first career home run for the Eagles. CSE returns to action on Saturday for their final game in Myrtle Beach when they play Ursuline College at 9:30 am.
