Morristown, N.J. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's basketball team (1-2, 1-0 NEAC) used a strong second half to take down Gallaudet University for their first win of the season, 83-70 on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 10-5 lead in the first quarter after
MaryJane Gutierrez knocked down a long distance three-pointer from the corner. The Bison of Gallaudet fought back at the end of the quarter, going on an 11-1 run to take a 16-11 lead with 1:30 remaining in the first period.
Deja Ingram added a late bucket for the Eagles as the Bison lead 18-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Ingram lead the Eagles to start the second quarter, scoring four quick points to regain the lead for CSE at 22-20. Junior
Jasmine Poole had a strong offensive game, adding two fast-break layups to give CSE a 32-30 lead. With 54 seconds remaining in the quarter,
Amerisse Rogers nailed a three-pointer to open up a four point lead.
Sharolin Sanders added a late bucket to give CSE a 41-35 halftime lead.
Gallaudet jumped out quickly in the second half to tie the score up at 42 before Rogers nailed her second three-pointer of the game, giving the Eagles a three point lead. The Eagles kept the pressure on in the third quarter, going on a 13-5 run to open up its first double-digit lead at 60-49. CSE would add five of the next six points to take a commanding 65-50 lead into the fourth period. CSE ended the quarter on an impressive 9-1 run, lead by senior
Ashley Pledger.
After an opening basket by Gallaudet to start the fourth quarter,
Sharolin Sanders knocked down another three-pointer to open up a 16 point Eagles lead. The Eagles would get the lead as high as 18 before Gallaudet used a quick 5-0 run to bring it back to 13. Despite cutting into the lead, the Eagles would knock down clutch free throws late in the quarter, taking the contest 83-70.
Jasmine Poole scored a career high 21 points while adding 9 rebounds.
Deja Ingram recorded her second double-double of the season, finishing with 17 points and 12 rebounds while
Ashley Pledger also added 17 points.
The Eagles look to make it two in a row tomorrow when they host Wilson College at 1 pm.
