Newark, N.J.- The College of Saint Elizabeth's volleyball team dropped their first match of the season at Rutgers-Newark, 17-25, 18-25, and 7-25 on Tuesday night.
Looking to continue their winning ways, CSE jumped out to an early 6-2 lead thanks to a kill by Katie Cooper. Rutgers-Newark went on a run of their own, opening up a 13-8 lead, leading to a timeout by CSE. Back to back errors by Rutgers-Newark would allow the Eagles to cut the lead to 21-15 late in set 1. CSE couldn't get any closer, as the Scarlet Knights took the first set 25-17.
The Eagles once again got out to an early lead, taking a 5-3 lead thanks to a kill by Ayesha Brannon. The Knights would fight back to take a 12-10 lead midway through set 2. The Knights would extend the lead to 20-15, leading to an Eagles timeout. The Eagles wouldn't be able to muster a late comeback, dropping the set 25-18.
Nicole Morera would serve an ace early in the third set to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. The Knights, however, would take 18 of the next 21 points to open up an 18-5 lead. The Knights would tack on 7 more points to take the set 25-7, and the match 3-0.
The Eagles drop to 3-1 on the year. Morera lead the Eagles with 26 digs and Katie Cooper added 16 digs. CSE returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Rosemont for a tri-match.
