Morristown, N.J.- Despite losing game 1 to William Paterson 3-1, the Eagles came back strong in game 2 to defeat Sarah Lawrence 3-0 on Saturday.
In the first set, the Pioneers from William Paterson jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, before Ireyah Stevens put away the longest rally of the match, cutting the lead to 2-1. With William Paterson leading 7-3, Katie Cooper smashed home a perfectly placed spike, cutting the deficit to 7-3. The Pioneers continued to be a tough matchup for the Eagles, opening up a 13-5 lead halfway through the first set. William Paterson upped the lead to 16-6 lead, leading to a CSE timeout. Following the timeout, Katie Cooper responded with another beautifully placed kill, cutting the lead to 9. CSE couldn't continue the comeback, dropping the first set 25-10.
Set 2 started off much more fluently for the Eagles as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers battled back to square things up at 4 before an unforced error gave the Eagles the 5-4 lead. WPU's Nicole Spicer served 3 straight service points to regain the lead 9-8. Battling back, Amy Cooper served an ace to once again give the Eagles the lead at 10-9. Â The set continued to have lead changes, as William Paterson took back the lead at 16-13. The Eagles would not go down easily as Katie Cooper served 3 straight points, tying the score up at 16 and leading to a William Paterson timeout. Tied at 18, the Pioneers had 2 straight errors to give the Eagles a 2 point lead. Kiana Cunningham kept the scoring coming, serving 2 straight aces to open up a 4 point lead. Leading 24-19, Amy Cooper served the game winning point, giving CSE the 25-19 set 2 win.
CSE continued to perplex William Paterson in set 3, forcing the Pioneers into 3 unforced errors, giving the Eagles the 3-2 lead. Trailing 6-3, Katie Cooper put away a kill, cutting the lead to 2. Trailing 11-6, Nicole Morera served 3 straight service points to bring the Eagles to within 11-9. The Eagles would rally back to tie the score up at 13 before William Paterson would retake the lead at 14-13. William Paterson would continue their offensive attack, scoring 9 straight points to open up a 23-13 lead. WPU would take 2 more points to win the set 25-16.
William Paterson jumped out early in set 4, taking a quick 5-1 lead. Natasia Wilson brought the Eagles back thanks to great serving, cutting the deficit to 5-4. The Pioneers would add the next 4 points to open the lead to 9-4. WPU would up the lead to 12-6, leading to a CSE timeout. Following the timeout, WPU would up the lead to 19-9. CSE would not be able to muster a comeback, dropping the 4th set 25-15, and losing the match 3-1.
In game 2 vs Sarah Lawrence, the Eagles jumped out early to an 8-2 lead thanks to great net play by Katie Cooper. Sarah Lawrence would manage to bring the lead to within 10-7 before Nicole Morera put away a kill, upping the lead to 4. Sarah Lawrence would make 3 straight unforced errors to up the Eagles lead to 14-7. With the Eagles now leading 21-12, Morera served an ace to give the Eagles the double digit lead. CSE would win 3 more points, taking set 1, 25-15.
CSE dominated the second set, winning it 25-9. CSE would once again dominate from the start in set 3. Amy Cooper had 4 early assists at the net, helping CSE to a 7-1 lead. The Eagles kept pouring it on, serving back to back aces to open up a 14-3 lead. Nicole Morera continued her stellar spiking ability, putting away a nicely placed kill to give the Eagles an 18-5 lead. CSE would manage to win 7 of the next 9 points to win the set 25-7 and win the match 3-0.
