Madison, N.J.- The College of Saint Elizabeth's basketball team fell to the College of Staten Island, 80-60, in the opening game of the Rose City Classic.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 8-2 lead thanks to a breakaway layup by
Alivia Roseboro. CSE extended the lead to 22-12 thanks to back-to-back buckets by
Danesha Triplett. Staten Island would quickly mount a comeback, going on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 24. Staten Island would manage to take a six-point lead before
Akeesha Belfon hit a jumper with two seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 40-36 at the half.
The Eagles started quickly in the second half, going on a 10-5 run to take a 45-44 lead. The Eagles couldn't maintain the lead, however, as Staten Island went on an 18-0 run to open up a 63-44 lead. The Eagles wouldn't get any closer, dropping the game, 80-60.
Ashley Pledger finished with a team-high 19 points while
Danesha Triplett added 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. CSE returns to action on Sunday for the consolation game of the Rose City Classic when they take on host Drew University at 12 pm.
