Mark Tonsul Announced as New Cheer and Stunt Coach

Morristown, N.J., May 15, 2023 - Saint Elizabeth University Interim Director of Athletics, Shawn Bragg, has announced the hiring of Mark Tonsul as Head Cheer and Stunt Coach.

"I am honored to elevate the STUNT/Cheer program at SEU," said Tonsul. "I am always looking for ways to be innovative in cheerleading, so stepping into the collegiate level is refreshing. I'm eager to introduce a style of athleticism that promotes school spirit and instill values that align with the vision of SEU."

Tonsul has been active in cheerleading in various aspects, from elementary, high school, pop warner, and all-star. This Newark native is well-connected with his hometown through his passion for cheerleading. He coordinated the Newark Public Schools Elementary Cheerleading program after winning the 2016 Newark Public Schools Elementary Cheerleading Competition, which led him to coordinate the program for the entire district until 2022. In his experience, he has organized and hosted clinics, tumbling classes, and annual competitions in the City of Newark.

"The athletic department is thrilled to welcome Mark as our new head coach for STUNT and cheerleading," said Bragg. "With his exceptional skills, passion, and commitment, Mark brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of experience to our program. We are excited for this new chapter  and the wonderful journey ahead for us."

As a coach, Tonsul was a Premier Cheer Camps instructor, where he hosted cheer camps nationwide for teaching fundamentals, choreography, and tumbling techniques. His Malcolm X Shabazz High School team won the 2022 Super Essex Conference Colonial Division Championship with the highest score throughout every division. Before that, he led his team at Barringer High School to back-to-back wins at the 2017 and 2018 Cheer Fest at Six Flags.

"The future of SEU STUNT/Cheer will break barriers as the first STUNT program in New Jersey," said Tonsul. "I plan on building a solid foundation that will grow into a program that produces athleticism, builds confidence, and be traditional. This is the start of a legacy of unlimited reach."
