Bryn Mawr, Pa. – The Saint Elizabeth University softball team earned its first playoff victory in program history on Tuesday with a 9-1 win at Rosemont in the first round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) playoff tournament.
The Eagles (10-9) came out of the gates on fire as the first three batters of the game loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Junior catcher
Karyn Shimazu (Kenilworth, N.J. / David Brearley) then singled-home junior infielder
Jontae Patton (Oxnard, Calif. / Rio Mesa) and sophomore outfielder
Amanda Lopez (Yucaipa, Calif. / Yucaipa) to take a 2-0 lead.
Saint Elizabeth made it 3-0 in the top of the second when sophomore outfielder
Mercedes Rivera (Millville, N.J. / Wildwood Catholic) singled to lead off the inning, stole second, and later scored on a Patton single.
Rosemont (9-10) scored in the bottom half of the second inning, but Saint Elizabeth kept its foot on the gas, and scored four more runs in the top of the third to take an insurmountable 7-1 lead before adding one more in the fifth and one in the sixth to secure the run rule victory.
A total of seven different Eagles had two hits, and Saint Elizabeth racked up 16 total base hits.
The CSAC Pitcher of the Year
Alyssa Hampton (Manchester, N.J. / Manchester Twp.) tossed another gem with a six-inning complete game, with no earned runs, three strikeouts, no walks, and just five hits allowed.
Saint Elizabeth advances to the second round on Friday, May 7, and will play the host Cedar Crest at 12 p.m.
