Fairless Hills, Pa. – The Saint Elizabeth University softball team registered its first victory of the shortened spring season against Cairn on Thursday with an 8-4 victory in game two of a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader played on a beautiful evening at Conwell Egan Catholic High School. The Eagles fell in game one, 6-2.
Game 1
Sophomore outfielder
Amanda Lopez (Yucaipa, Calif. / Yucaipa) led off the game with a triple and scored on a one-out single from senior infielder
Teya Carr (Moreno Valley, Calif. / Rancho Verde).
The Highlanders (3-9, 1-3 CSAC) responded with three runs in the bottom of the second, and the Eagles (1-5, 1-5 CSAC) made it 3-2 in the fourth when senior outfielder
Kathryn Harrigan (Sayreville, N.J. / Sayreville War Memorial) scored after leading off the inning with a single. However, Saint Elizabeth left the bases loaded, and were not able to regain the lead for the remainder of the contest.
Game 2
The Eagles exploded for eight runs over the first four innings after giving up a run in the bottom of the first. The big inning game in the fourth when Saint Elizabeth strung together a walk, single, double, triple, double and single to plate five runs and jump out to an 8-1 advantage.
The Highlanders were unable to keep pace as senior pitcher
Alyssa Hampton (Manchester, N.J. / Manchester Twp.) allowed just three earned with two strikeouts and a walk over a complete-game effort.
Lopez finished the second game 2-for-4 with a double, triple and RBI. Junior catcher
Karyn Shimazu (Kenilworth, N.J. / David Brearley) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a triple, while sophomore outfielder
Mercedes Rivera (Millville, N.J. / Wildwood Catholic) finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, triple, and an RBI.
