Eagles Sweep Clarks Summit on Senior Day

Flemington, N.J. – The Saint Elizabeth University baseball team got a masterful performance on the mound and at the plate from senior John Capozzoli (East Williston, N.Y. / Kellenberg Memorial) in an 11-0 victory to open a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader with Clarks Summit at Diamond Nation on Wednesday. The Eagles then topped the Defenders, 12-7 in the nightcap.

Game 1

The Eagles (4-6, 3-5 CSAC) scored four in the third and four in the fourth to secure an insurmountable lead, as Capozzoli tossed a seven-inning complete game shutout, struck out four, and allowed just four hits. At the plate, he went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.

Sophomore Josh Koller (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Spackenhill) had one of the best offensive outbursts in program history, as he was 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double, four runs scored, and a walk.

Sophomore Angelo Marabello (Saddle Brook, N.J. / St. Mary's) finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs, a walk, and a stolen base.

Game 2

Clarks Summit (2-12, 1-9 CSAC) took a 6-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning, but the Eagles responded with five of their own in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game at 6-6.

In the bottom of the sixth, Saint Elizabeth got an RBI single from junior Drew Zimmerman (Sayerville, N.J. / Sayreville War Memorial), and an RBI double from Marabello to take its first lead of the game at 8-6.

The Defenders got one run back in the seventh, but the Saint Elizabeth offense kept grinding, and added one run in the seventh and three in the eighth to secure the sweep.

Koller went 2-for-4 with two runs, three RBIs, a walk, and a stolen base. Capozzoli finished 2-for-5 with two runs, an RBI, and three steals. Zimmerman was 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs, a walk, and two stolen bases.
