Morristown, N.J. – The Saint Elizabeth University softball team squeezed out a 1-0 victory in the opener on Saturday and came away with a 16-8 victory in game two in a Colonial States Athletic (CSAC) doubleheader against Clarks Summit at the SEU Softball Field.
Game 1
Sophomore outfielder
Amanda Lopez (Yucaipa, Calif. / Yucaipa) scored on a base hit from junior infielder
Jontae Patton (Oxnard, Calif. / Rio Mesa) in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the Eagles (5-7, 5-7 CSAC) ahead.
The Defenders (1-15, 0-8 CSAC) got the tying run on base in the top of the seventh, but senior pitcher
Alyssa Hampton (Manchester, N.J. / Manchester Twp.) shut the door to secure a complete game shutout. She struck out six batters over 7.0 innings.
Patton and Lopez each finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.
Game 2
The second game of the afternoon had no shortage of scoring, as Clarks Summit made it 1-0 in the top of the first, before the Eagles regained the lead in the bottom half of the frame when they made it 3-1. Saint Elizabeth then rallied for three runs in the second, two in the third, four in the fourth, and four in the fifth to secure the five-inning run rule victory.
Six different Eagles registered two or more hits and nine players had one or more RBI. Patton finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs, a stolen base, and a walk. Lopez was 2-for-4 for one RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored, while sophomore outfielder
Mercedes Rivera (Millville, N.J. / Wildwood Catholic) was 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.
