MORRISTOWN, N.J. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's women's volleyball team (3-4, 0-1 NEAC) stormed back to win the final two sets and earn its first conference win over Penn State Abington, (12-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 15-11) on Wednesday evening.
The Nittany Lions got off to a hot start, scoring five of the next six points. After an Eagles timeout, trailing 15-4,
Stephanie Mitarotonda served three straight service points to cut the deficit to 15-8. CSE managed to get within six, but could not get any closer, dropping the first 25-12.
After trailing 5-2 early in set two, the Eagles stormed back with five straight points to take its first lead of the day, 7-5. The set went back and forth over the next 15 points before the Eagles won two straight points to take a 15-14 lead. With the set tied at 18, CSE ripped off seven straight points, taking the set 25-18 and tying the match at one. To end the set,
Maura Farley served five straight aces, the longest streak of the season.
Both teams played evenly throughout the start of the third before the Eagles gained a slight edge at 12-10, leading to an Abington timeout. The back and forth action continued before Abington gained its largest lead of the match at 20-18. Abington would not give up the lead over the final nine points, taking the third set, 25-22.
The fourth set saw the Nittany Lions take an early five-point lead at 14-9. Determined not to lose, the Eagles stormed back from a 17-12 deficit to take a 20-19 lead. CSE continued to ride the momentum at the end of the set, taking it 25-22 and tying the match at two.
In the decisive fifth set, trailing 4-3,
Diane Cuevas served six straight points to give the Eagles an 9-4 lead. The Nittany Lions clawed its way back in the set to get within two, however the Eagles won the next two points to regain a 13-9 lead. Leading 14-11, the Eagles forced an error by the Nittany Lions, taking the set 15-11 and earning the 3-2 come from behind victory.
Maura Farley led the Eagles with a sensational day, finishing with 17 assists, 12 kills and six service aces.
Stephanie Mitarotonda added 14 digs and 10 kills while
Joralis Nivar had 19 digs and four assists.
CSE returns to action on Friday when it travels to Trinity Washington for a 7 pm start.
