Morristown, N.J. – The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (7-29, 4-16 NEAC) dropped their final doubleheader of the season to Gallaudet University, 12-10 and 16-13 on Saturday afternoon.
In the top of the first, the Bison plated five runs to take a 5-0 lead. Rachael Romer drove in the first Eagles run in the bottom of the inning, slicing the deficit to four.
Trailing 7-2 in the fifth, Megan Lapinski lined a two-out RBI single to right, getting the Eagles within 7-3. After Gallaudet added two runs in the sixth, the Eagles would not go away, scoring their fourth run of the game off an error, while loading the bases with no outs. Heather Passaro and Romer had RBI groundouts in the inning, getting the Eagles within 9-6 heading to the final inning.
Following three runs in the top of the seventh by the Bison, the Eagles loaded the bases in the final half inning with no outs. With a 2-1 count, Marie Goodman lined a double down the left field line, cutting the deficit to 12-8. Later in the inning, Passaro lined a RBO single, getting the Eagles within 12-10 and bringing the tying run to the plate. Despite the tying run at the plate, the Eagles were unable to do anymore damage, narrowly dropping the contest.
In the top of the first in game two, the Bison plated the first two runs of the game. In the bottom of the second, Marielis Alicea blooped a single into right field, driving in the first run of the game for the Eagles. Later in the inning, Stephanie Moya added a RBI groundout, tying the score after two innings.
On the mound for the Eagles, Danesha Triplett held the Bison scoreless over the next 2 2/3 innings before the Bison scored a two-out unearned run to take a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Elizabeth Unger lined a RBI single to left, tying the game at three.
In the top of the sixth, the Bison scored nine unearned runs to open up a 12-3 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Victoria Ciallella and Marie Goodman added run scoring hits, keeping the Eagles alive at 12-5, heading to the seventh inning. Although Gallaudet scored four in the top of the seventh, the Eagles refused to go down lightly. Romer lined a RBI single with no outs in the bottom of the inning to get within ten. Ciallella and Goodman added run scoring singles with one out in the inning to cut the deficit to 16-9. The merry-go-round continued as Moya and Romer added run scoring singles to bring the tying run to bat with one out. The Eagles would manage one more run, but could not complete the comeback, falling 16-13 despite scoring eight runs in the final inning of the season.
Heather Passaro finished the season leading the team with a .405 batting average. Despite a slow start to the season, Elizabeth Unger finished with a .385 batting average and team highs of four home runs and 39 RBI's.
