Clermont, Fl. – The College of Saint Elizabeth's softball team (1-5, 0-0 NEAC) dropped its opening game to Immaculata University, 13-0 before downing Penn State Kensington, 8-3 for its first victory of the season on Tuesday morning.
In game one, Immaculata jumped out early, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning before the Eagles came to bat. In the bottom of the inning, Heather Passaro and Rachael Romer led off with back to back singles, but were stranded on base.
Immaculata added two runs in the second inning and three more in the fourth to open up a nine-run lead. The Eagles offense was held hitless over the next four innings as the Eagles fell in five, 13-0.
In the top of the first of game two, Marie Goodman lined a RBI double to left to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. With the score tied at one in the second inning, Romer reached on an error by the shortstop, scoring Caitlin Gibson to regain a one-run lead. With the bases loaded and two outs, Goodman smashed a two run double to left, giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead.
After back to back hits in the top of the third, Marielis Alicea ripped a RBI double to left, opening up a four-run lead for CSE. On the mound, Alicea kept Kensington in check, allowing just two hits through the first three innings.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Kensington loaded the bases, but Alicea struck out the number eight batter looking, escaping the jam. After Kensington added a run in the fifth inning, the Eagles came right back with a sacrifice fly by Victoria Ciallella to take a 6-2 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Passaro drove in Alicea to up the lead to five. The next batter, Romer, roped a double to left, scoring Passaro from first to give the Eagles an 8-2 lead. Kensington would score a run in the bottom of the inning, but Romer would strikeout the final batter, sealing the victory for the Eagles.
Romer, Passaro and Gibson finished the day with three hits each. Goodman added two hits and three RBI's while Alicea picked up her first win of the season on the mound.
Following a day off on Wednesday, the Eagles return to action on Thursday with games against New England College and Juniata College.
