Eagles Fly Past Dolphins for Second Straight Win

Morristown, N.J. - The College of Saint Elizabeth's women's volleyball team (5-11, 1-3 NEAC) flew past Staten Island for its second straight victory, defeating the Dolphins, 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-21) on Thursday evening.

Riding the momentum from Tuesday's win, the Eagles stormed out of the gate, winning nine of the first 13 points to take a 9-4 lead. Leading 15-11 midway through the first set, Maura Farley smashed home a perfectly placed kill to give the Eagles a five-point lead. CSE continued to dominate in the set, winning the final four points to take the set, 25-15.

The Eagles continued to dominate in the second set, winning nine of the first 11 points, thanks to five straight service points by Stephanie Mitarotonda. The Dolphins managed to cut the lead to five before the Eagles ran off three straight points to open up a 20-12 lead. The Dolphins refused to go away in the set, cutting the lead to as little as four before the Eagles took the final three points to win the set, 25-18.

Despite trailing two sets to none, Staten island took control early in set three, winning nine of the first 13 points to take a 9-4 lead. Despite trailing by as many as six in the set, the Eagles came roaring back to quickly tie the score at 12. The Dolphins would not go away quietly, however, winning the next five points to take a 17-12 lead. Continuing her dominating serving, Mitarotonda served five straight points including three aces to give the Eagles its first lead of the set at 19-18. With the Eagles leading 21-20. Jessica Garreffa served three straight winners to get the Eagles to match point. With the score 24-21, Yasmin'na Muhammad put away the game winner, giving the Eagles the four point win.

Farley led the Eagles with 21 assists,13 digs, and two service aces. Muhammad added seven kills and three service aces while Mitarotonda finished with nine kills and five service aces.

CSE returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Keuka College for a 1 pm start.
